MMA / GRAPPLING

BJJ IN MMA

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one part of MMA, but the positions behave differently once punches, kicks, takedowns and the cage are part of the equation.

What carries over

Positional awareness, guard work, back control, escapes, submissions and transitions remain important. The ability to control an opponent and create a finishing opportunity is still central.

What changes

Open guard can be harder to play when strikes are legal. Getting pinned against the cage changes posture and movement. A grappler also has to manage takedowns and striking while trying to reach a dominant position.

The modern MMA grappler

The most effective MMA grappling is usually connected to wrestling, clinch work and striking. A BJJ technique may be excellent on the mat but still need modification for the cage and the threat of ground strikes.
